Thoughts for Thursday: Choosing A Photographer

Peanut Butter is coming up on the big 2 and I'd like to get some professional shots done. I don't really want the JCPenny or the equivalent look. I was considering going back to the folks who did her year in photos, but they were not the friendliest folks on her last session. I understand that shooting a one year old who is mobile can be difficult, but to yell at me about it during the shoot, I didn't think appropriate. I have almost considered driving to Minnesota to have Jessica take some shots. I don't know if it is possible for her to take a bad photo. I have been mulling over Kayla, she is local and I "know" her from the cyber world. I should make up my mind here pretty soon. How did you find that photographer you love? Word of mouth? Searching one out? Know anyone in southern Wisconsin that I should look up?

Can't help you there. I am a sucker for black and white impromptu shots that I take my self. They are plastered all over my house. That and a couple of paintings of my children which I was fortunate to obtain.

Both Kayla and Jessica are phenomenal photographers!! You couldn't go wrong either way :)

I'm using Jessica hopefully this Sunday. I'm super excited about it too. It may be worth the drive!

That's a tough one. I know several pretty good photographers, but since they don't do it professionally, you'd have no way of knowing them. So, there's probably some creative people in your area and I don't have a clue to tell you how to hook up with them :-(. An ad in the paper might get some creepy person. We're big on the fantasy photos right now (faeries, angels etc..), luckily there's a couple of places that do them. Good luck!

I am on a photo forum for lighting equipment and almost all users are more or less pro photographers.
You could put a post up there to see if there is one of them that are close to you.

The photographer you choose should be one that accepts children and little ones. It requires patience to get great photos of children and it's not everyone that has that.
Unfortunately some photographers are in it for the money and that's not a good combination when dealing with kids. If the "pro" doesn't burn for it... it shows.

I could send a ping out if you are interested (email udsigt.photography at gmail.com).

Man - I just posted Sumo's portraits from Picture People. The pictures were great but the experience REALLY sucked.

We're also going to Portrait Innovations when my husband comes home on leave because he wants pictures of the whole family to take back to Iraq with him. Anyway, I've heard great things about them - we'll see if they can live up to the hype!
